Skiing in Japan

Ski season is almost upon us—I just came across a great video: “Japan: A Skier’s Journey.” The footage from Hokkaido’s coast and hardwood forests shows what an incredible place it is during the winter monsoons. Enjoy the skiing and travel inspiration!

Switchback Travel 2.0

I hope everyone is getting out and enjoying the summer. Exciting times are on the horizon for Switchback Travel and I wanted to give a quick update:

First, I’m happy to announce that Switchback Travel 2.0 is on the way! I recently met with the folks who designed and developed the site (Hovie Studios and the Bear Group) and we have some terrific additions in the works. Here are the highlights:

Best Adventure Bar/ Outdoors Photos

It was a lot of fun putting together our list of 10 finalists for Best Adventure Bar in the U.S. The process was a combination of research, experience, feedback from travelers, and everybody out there on Facebook and Twitter. If you haven’t yet voted, we have a poll up on our Facebook page and I’m putting together an article featuring the finalists. All are terrific venues, and if you are in the places where they are located life is good.

Top 10 Adventure Destinations for 2012

The response has been terrific to Switchback Travel’s Top 10 Adventure Destinations for 2012. It was a fun article to put together and will definitely become an annual staple of the site.

Andrew Skurka article

A quick update: I recently posted an article that I highly recommend featuring  long-distance hiker Andrew Skurka . A while back I came across a video of his Alaska-Yukon expedition—which is embedded at the bottom of the article on Switchback—and it took some time to process Andrew’s accomplishments. At 30 he has already completed three of the longest and most difficult hikes ever recorded.

Maps and Back At It

An update on the happenings at Switchback Travel:

2012, Neptune, Greenland, and Onward...

2012 has been awesome thus far. During the holidays we hit the cross-country ski trails in Northern Wisconsin and Michigan’s Upper Peninsula before making the trip back home to Seattle. Two weekends ago we drove to the Methow Valley in the North Cascades and it exceeded all expectations. Ample snow, superb ski trails, sun, and good people. To be sure, the Methow is on the short list of the best mountain areas in the U.S.

Why the Outdoors?

It’s been a fantastic year—we moved to Seattle, got married, and Switchback Travel was launched. In the year ahead the website will grow even bigger and better with new countries, more content, and great features.

I will sign off for 2011 with some thoughts on the outdoors:

Merry Christmas and Our Winner...

Merry Christmas to all and congrats to Colin Liebold, the winner of Switchback Travel’s first Christmas giveaway. Colin will receive a pair of Crescent Moon Silver Series 9 high-performance snowshoes—we know you will get much enjoyment and see some beautiful country with your new gear. Thank to Jake Thamm over at Crescent Moon for their participation and we look forward to visiting their environmentally friendly factory in Boulder in the near future.
