You won't find a more dramatic setting for a marathon than Switzerland’s Bernese Oberland region, also known as the Bernese Alps. The Jungfrau Marathon starts in the town of the Interlaken, first circling the town center before heading upward beneath the storied Swiss peaks of Eiger, Mönch, and Jungfrau. Runners reach their highest elevation of 7,234 feet (2,205 meters) toward the end of the race around the 25-mile (40-kilometer) mark.

The Jungfrau Marathon is one of the world’s most famous mountain marathons; registration opens in February and the 4,000 available spots fills quickly.
