New Zealand’s Glacier Country doesn’t offer ultra-luxury accommodations like Queenstown or Te Anau, but there are a number of quality places to stay. Below are our recommendations for Fox Glacier (prices are listed in USD for the 2012-2013 peak season).

Motels and Lodges

Westhaven Motel ($110–$130)
You couldn’t ask for more in a motel: central location, views, immaculate rooms with kitchenettes, and reasonable rates.

Fox Glacier Lodge ($130–$150)
The website for the Fox Glacier Lodge doesn’t correlate with the quality of the accommodation—it’s a great place to stay. The private cabins are a terrific value and campsites are available as well.

Misty Peaks ($275)
Misty Peaks is a bed and breakfast/homestay style accommodation just over 1 km from downtown Fox Glacier. With nice rooms and tasty meals, the only drawback is the price.

Holiday Parks and Camping

Fox Glacier Holiday Park & Motels ($30–$180)
The full range of holiday park accommodations is available including motel rooms, dorms, powered sites, and tent sites.

Gillespies Beach (DOC Public Campsite; $8)
The Department of Conservation campground at Gillespies Beach is a bumpy 21-kilometer drive from the village of Fox Glacier. The location is ideal—it’s very close to the beach with views of the glaciers—but with only eight designated campsites it gets very crowded in the peak season. Given the long drive, the result is that many more than eight groups camp there.
