Summer is upon us, and for many outdoor enthusiasts, that means spending more time outside doing the activities we love most. Quality gear certainly doesn’t come cheap, but REI’s 4th of July Sale and Clearance—which kicks off on Friday, June 23 and runs through Tuesday, July 4 —is a great chance to save on big-ticket items for your upcoming adventures. Below we outline the dates and details of the sale, our favorite discounted items, and how to shop both in-store and online. Given the extensive scope of this year’s sale, we’ve also included a curated list below our picks highlighting more of the biggest and most notable deals.

This article has been sponsored by REI, but the picks and descriptions below were made independently and based on our experiences with and opinions of the products.

Dates and Details: June 23-July 4, 2023

From June 23 through July 4, you can shop in store, at REI.com, or through the online REI Outlet and save up to 50% on marked-down items from top brands like Osprey, Gregory, La Sportiva, Kelty, REI Co-op, and many more. Importantly, some of the deals are only available to members, which will require purchasing a $30 lifetime membership in order to take advantage of the savings (we call out the members-only discounts where applicable below). In addition, members also get $20 off Outlet purchases of $100 or more with the code OUT4JUL23 (online only; valid 6/30 to 7/4). Below we outline some of our top picks for on-sale gear, including tents, hiking boots, stoves, backpacks, sleep systems, and more.

Our Favorite 4th of July Deals

REI Co-op Half Dome SL 2+ Tent: 40% Off (Members Only)

REI Co-op Half Dome SL tentQuality backpacking tents are generally a pricey bunch, but REI Co-op’s Half Dome SL 2+ stands out for its hard-to-beat combination of price and performance. At just $329 full MSRP and around $198 during the sale, the Half Dome is the tent we recommend most to family and friends: It’s roomy for two (not always the case with backpacking tents), well built and durable, very easy to set up and take down, and comes with ample mesh for stargazing and ventilation. The Half Dome isn’t the lightest option available at 4 pounds 11.5 ounces all in, but it’s affordable, livable, and stands up well to long-term use—a winning recipe for many. Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention that all REI tents are discounted by 40% for members through July 4, and a few other staff favorites include the budget-friendly Trail Hut 2, weather-ready Base Camp 6, and luxurious Wonderland 6 (the latter two are spacious and fully featured camping designs).

La Sportiva Men’s Ultra Raptor II and Women’s Ultra Raptor II Mid GTX: 25% Off

La Sportiva Ultra Raptor II Mid GTX hiking bootsLa Sportiva is one of the biggest names in outdoor footwear, and we’ve been consistently impressed by everything from their trail runners to climbing shoes. Their Ultra Raptor II Mid hiking boots are no exception, combining excellent stability and durability in an impressively light and nimble package. These boots are a particularly good match for fast-and-light mountain objectives that involve covering technical ground: Protection is good thanks to the generous toe cap and thick TPU reinforcements, and the stiff FriXion outsole provides reliable grip on everything from dry singletrack to rocky alpine terrain. A final highlight is weather resistance, including a waterproof but breathable Gore-Tex Extended Comfort liner, tall collar, and elastic-like gaiter to seal out moisture and debris. For trail runners, La Sportiva's popular Bushido II shares the same discount as the Ultra Raptor.

Eureka Ignite Plus 2-Burner Camp Stove: 40% Off

Eureka Ignite Plus 2-Burner camp stoveCamping stoves make it quick and easy to whip up delicious meals in the wilderness, and Eureka’s Ignite Plus is one of the most well-rounded options on the market. The two 10,000-BTU burners pump out plenty of heat, the cooking area is wide and can accommodate bigger pots and pans, and Eureka didn’t skimp on features with good simmer control and push-button ignition, which keeps your hands safe from large bursts of flame and makes the prep process a bit quicker. All in all, the Ignite Plus is decently powerful, solidly built, and comes with all the trimmings we look for in a quality camp stove. Eureka also makes a cheaper version of the Ignite, which sports a smaller cooking space and less simmer control but remains a solid all-around choice (both are 40% off through July 4).

Exped Ultra 3R Sleeping Pad: 40% Off

Exped Ultra 3R sleeping padExped is a sleeping pad specialist, and they recently simplified their collection to make the buying process easier: The Ultra series is the lightest of the bunch, the Dura is the most durable, and the Versa is the most versatile design for year-round use. For summer backpackers, we like the Ultra 3R best: The pad boasts a generous 3 inches of cushion that nicely isolate you from the ground below, checks in at a reasonable 1 pound (for the medium size), and comes with a handy pump bag for inflation. Exped didn’t skimp on the smaller details, either, including low-profile valves, internal welded baffles that help minimize cold spots, and large outer chambers to keep you from rolling off in the middle of the night. The 2.9 R-value is on the lower end for shoulder-season and high-alpine use—in that case, we’d recommend stepping up to the Ultra 5R (R-value: 4.8)—but it’s perfectly serviceable for most fair-weather trips. Of note: All Ultra and Dura pads are 40% off, so most backpackers should be able to find a good match for their objectives.

Jetboil Flash Cooking System: 25% Off

Jetboil Flash Cooking SystemDehydrated meals have gotten downright tasty in recent years, and many backpackers now use their stove primarily to boil water. If this sounds like you, Jetboil’s Flash is one of the most intuitive and easy-to-use designs currently on the market. This all-in-one stove offers quick boiling with an included cooking cup (with an insulated coozie) that attaches directly to the stove via a heat exchanger, making it efficient and weather-resistant (a key point of distinction between the Flash and non-integrated alternatives). The Flash can boil one liter of water in around 3.5 minutes, and the total weight of 13.1 ounces is reasonable considering you don’t need an additional pot. If you’re looking for something different, all backpacking stoves are 25% off through July 4, from the diminutive MSR PocketRocket 2 to the alpine-ready WindBurner Stove System.

Kelty Low Loveseat: 25% Off

Kelty Low Loveseat camping chairMost camping chairs are made for one person, but Kelty’s Low Loveseat is a fun and practical alternative for couples. Importantly, the chair is high on comfort with a wide and supportive seat that’s slightly reclined, and you get thoughtful details like adjustable armrests and insulated drink holders. Build quality is also quite good for the price, including a hardwearing steel frame and thick (600D) seat that can support up to 400 pounds total. Keep in mind that the seat is rather low at just 13.5 inches off the ground (many camp chairs are closer to 18 in.), but the upside is that the Low Loveseat is stable and still pretty easy to get in and out of—plus, it’s outdoor concert-friendly. If you like the design but not the two-person capacity, Kelty offers the one-person Lowdown Chair and three-person Lowdown Couch, both of which are also 25% off.

Osprey Poco Plus Child Carrier: 25% Off

Osprey Poco Plus child carrierFor hitting the trail with a little one in tow, baby carrier packs make it easy and comfortable to shuttle a child and gear. And Osprey’s Poco Plus stands out as one of the most well-equipped options on the market in 2023. Also offered in base and lighter-weight “LT” options (both of which are also 25% off through July 4), the Plus model here is Osprey’s top-end design and checks most of the boxes we look for in a premium child carrier. The 26-liter capacity is ample for everything from long day hikes to overnight treks with the family (if you can divvy up gear), and the feature set is well sorted with dual grab handles, myriad pockets, an integrated sunshade, and a wide seat with adjustable stirrups and a removable drool pad. It’s a sizable investment at $395 MSRP, but buying during the sale will save you around $100. For a small step down in price, Kelty’s Journey PerfectFit collection is similarly well built and also discounted by 25%.

BioLite AlpenGlow 500 Lantern: 25% Off

BioLite AlpenGlow 500 camping lanternNew York-based BioLite is well known for their innovative wood-burning stoves, but their camping lantern collection is arguably just as well executed. Our favorite model in their lineup—and on the market—is the AlpenGlow 500, which combines an impressive 500-lumen max output with a nicely sorted feature set, including a built-in loop to hang the lantern at camp, integrated USB port to charge devices like your phone or tablet, and several color modes—from warm or cool white to a fun “fireworks” function. It’s all wrapped up in a sleek and modern package that’s held up impressively well to frequent use. BioLite also sells the cheaper and lighter AlpenGlow 250, which is around $15 off during the 4th of July Sale. Outside of BioLite’s lineup, we also like LuminAid’s solar lanterns and Black Diamond’s Moji collection, both of which share the same discount as the AlpenGlows.

Deuter Men’s Aircontact Core 65 + 10 and Women’s Aircontact Core 60 + 10SL: 25% Off

Deuter Aircontact Core 65 10 backpacking packGermany-based Deuter has been pumping out quality packs since the early 1900s, and their current collection holds court with premium offerings from brands like Osprey and Gregory. The Aircontact Core is the brand’s versatile all-rounder and puts a real premium on comfort and organization. Highlights include a thoughtfully built suspension system and harness that offer great support, a hanging mesh backpanel that allows for generous airflow, and functional storage inside and out. Deuter also included an easy-to-use system for tweaking the torso length, and we love that the pack is built with recycled and bluesign-approved materials. The Aircontact does fall short of leading competitors in terms of fit (it’s only offered in one size) and load carrying capacity (it can handle up to 44 lb.), but at around $188 during the sale, it’s an undeniably good value.

Nemo Men’s Disco 15 and Women’s Disco 15 Sleeping Bag: 30% Off

Nemo Disco 15 sleeping bagNemo’s spoon-shaped sleeping bags are a hit for comfort seekers and side sleepers, and their Disco 15 combines that accommodating shape with quality down insulation and thoughtful features. In terms of protection, the 650-fill-power down has a hydrophobic treatment for fending off light moisture with a waterproof panel around the toe for added assurance. Other details include a built-in sleeve at the hood for keeping your pillow in place, zippered “gills” at the top of the bag to release hot air in warm weather, and a draft collar and tube to combat the cold. The spacious design and mid-range down fill do add some weight and bulk, but there’s no denying the roominess and functional features. For a lighter and more premium option, REI’s Magma 15 is reduced from $399 to around $240 for members during the sale. And if you’re just starting out, Nemo’s Aurora tent and Tensor sleeping pads are 40% off and quality all-around performers.

Hest Sleep System Sleeping Pad: 25% Off

Hest Sleep System Sleeping PadMixing premium materials and an innovative multi-layer design, Hest’s Sleep System is one of the most comfortable and luxurious camping mats on the market. In fact, calling it a “camping mat” doesn’t really do it justice: The Sleep System is essentially two pads in one, combining an open-cell foam layer at the top with a denser blend on the bottom for added support and cushioning. Rounding out the build is an inflatable base that provides a solid and rigid structure to isolate you from the ground, resulting in excellent comfort and warmth (the 11.8 R-value means it’s great for year-round use). The Sleep System is on the heavy and bulky end compared to more standard camping mats, but there’s no denying the premium and plush feel, making it a standout pick for finicky sleepers in particular. For a lighter and more manageable option, Hest’s thinner Foamy is also marked down through July 4 (from $349 to $262).

Icemule Pro Large Backpack Cooler: 25% Off

Icemule Pro Large coolerA quality cooler is a must-have for many outdoor-goers, regardless of how you choose to recreate. Hard-sided models lead the charge in ice retention and durability, but a backpack-style option like Icemule’s Pro Cooler is far more portable while still providing good insulation and overall performance for day trips. Unlike standard soft coolers, the Icemule Pro’s padded straps make it comfortable to carry when loaded down with ice, food, and drinks, and the ventilated backpanel does a nice job at keeping you cool. Durability is another hallmark, including an exceptionally tough and fully waterproof exterior that’s reminiscent of a dry bag. And a final bonus for water sports enthusiasts: It floats. Note: We included the 23-liter model here, and the 33-liter XL version is also 25% off.
