Affiliate Snowsports Editor

Switchback is looking for a high-energy, creative wordsmith with a passion for the outdoors to help grow high-quality, snow-sports-focused gear reviews and buyer’s guides. The Affiliate Editor, Snowsports establishes review methodology and assigns, writes, and edits publication-ready content that informs and engages readers and catalyzes purchase behavior. This role is explicitly responsible for monitoring and growing affiliate revenue while maintaining journalistic integrity.

Ideal candidates will be talented writers with strong communication skills and the ability to convey complex technical information in a way that’s easy to process for the reader. Possessing a wide knowledge of different facets of the skiing and snowboarding industry is a must, as you’ll be helping us recommend the best tools, apparel, and gear to our readers across the globe. The position is remote, so reliable internet access, the ability to self-regulate, and on-time delivery are required. The preferred candidate will also be willing to travel once or twice a year for on-location testing and photoshoots with a team. Preference will go to applicants with backcountry experience and proficiency.

This position will start as a 40-hour contract role with the potential to convert to a salaried, benefits-eligible position in approximately 6 months. This position is remote, and someone in Washington State or the Lake Tahoe region is preferred. The expected compensation for this position is $55,000-$65,000 per year based on skills, experience, and geographic location.

    Responsibilities:

    • Assign, write, and edit publication-ready Buyer’s Guides and product reviews
    • Supervise freelance resources to create content as directed
    • Create or coordinate supporting visuals (e.g., photographs, pull-out quotes) for pieces
    • Demonstrate subject matter expertise in several of the following categories:
      • Skiing (downhill, cross-country, backcountry)
      • Snowboarding
      • Other winter outdoor activities (snowshoeing, skating, ice climbing, etc.)
      • General wilderness travel, climbing, outdoor exploration, camping, etc.
    • Demonstrate a solid understanding of SEO principles and practices
    • Use tools, including data from affiliate networks, Google Analytics, Accuranker, etc., to monitor and improve key metrics, including search rankings, affiliate revenue, traffic, etc.
       

    Requirements:

    • 2+ years of editorial experience, preferably in digital publications with affiliate marketing
    • Proficient with Google Workspace, Slack, Monday, and other project management tools
    • Strong communication, collaboration, and project management skills
    • Familiarity with digital publishing tools, content management systems, and affiliate networks
    • Comfort reporting, analyzing, and interpreting data to drive decisions
    • Excellent attention to detail and ability to meet tight deadlines
    • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work in a fast-paced environment
    • Ability to work independently and take ownership of projects
    • Bachelor's degree in English, journalism, communications, or related field (preferred)

    Freelance Outdoor Gear Testers

    We are excited to add qualified Outdoor Gear Testers to our growing team. The position is remote—we are primarily located in the western half of the US—but you can live and work anywhere with good outdoor access.

      Responsibilities:

      • Test and photograph outdoor gear locally and on designated testing trips.
      • Write in-depth reviews based on your experiences. 
      • Research new and existing products in a range of gear categories.
      • Contribute to informational gear articles as needed.


      Requirements:

      • A high level of outdoor experience and authenticity. Key areas of expertise that we are always looking for include mountain biking, backpacking, running, skiing, and snowboarding.
      • Excellent writing and photography skills.
      • Understanding of Switchback Travel’s voice.
      • Attention to detail and the ability to meet deadlines.

      • Running—priority given to long-distance road runners, but trail runners are also encouraged to apply
